The ABC of fall protection...

A. You must risk assess each individual work task

Before starting a work task where you have to use your fall protection equipment, you must find out whether there are any physical or psychological stresses, disadvantages or anything else that may be associated with using the fall protection equipment for the work task in question.

B. Always use fall protection where there is a risk of falling

If you have to perform a work task where there is a risk of falling, or where there is 2 meters from a vertical drop on a level working area, then it is mandatory to use fall protection equipment.

C. Your own height must be taken into account when calculating drop length

When using fall arresters, it is very important that you calculate the required clearance - you can read more about clearance in the relevant product's user manual.

D. Your anchor point MUST be able to handle a load of 1,200 kg

And this anchoring point should, as far as possible, be established above head height.

E. You must review the instructions and the fall protection product before using it – this is a requirement!

Improper use of a fall protection product can result in serious bodily injury or, in the worst case, death. Therefore, it is a requirement that you as a user go through the user manual and fall protection product before it is put into use.

F. You must always check the weight ratio of the fall protection equipment used

Always check the weight load for the fall protection equipment used, and remember to include your own weight and any tool. The maximum weight for fall protection may vary depending on the brand and product type. Read more about maximum load in the product's user manual.

G. REMEMBER to register when you use your fall protection equipment for the first time

You must register when you use your fall protection equipment for the first time. There is often a sticker on the fall protection equipment where this can be done, and you also have the opportunity to see when the equipment has been serviced.

H. Always make an evacuation plan before using your fall protection equipment - in case of an accident!

As a user of fall protection equipment, it is a legal requirement that a rescue and evacuation plan is drawn up when you use the equipment. If, for example, you are hanging on to the equipment after a fall, you must get down as soon as possible, since in less than half an hour you can create e.g. blood clots.

J. You must always check that your fall protection equipment is correctly labeled and perform a visual inspection.

Before using your fall protection equipment, you must always check that the equipment is correctly marked with the date of commissioning, serial number and last inspection date, and you must also visually inspect it for any damages and defects. I. If the fall protection equipment has been exposed to a fall, you MUST immediately send it for inspection

If the accident has happened and the fall protection equipment has been exposed to a fall, it must not be used anymore. Harnesses and ropes must be discarded, and fall blocks must be inspected by a trained competent person.

K. REMEMBER that your fall protection equipment must be inspected

Your fall protection equipment must be inspected at least every 12 months, where it must be inspected by a trained competent person - even if it has not been used within the last year.

Fall protection - approved up to 150 kg

Over the past 30 years, men's average weight has risen steadily and is today 85 kg. Does a person, including equipment, weigh more than 100 kg. must use fall protection equipment approved for more than 100 kg. according to CNB/P/11.062.

Together with our partner and manufacturer Tractel, we can now present the solution to this challenge.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Is there really a need to switch to fall protection with a capacity of more than 100 kg?
It is more expensive than you might think. It is not uncommon to have an employee who weighs 90 kg or more. With safety equipment and tools, the weight can easily exceed 100 kg. Remember that in the event of an incident, it is the manager who distributes safety equipment to their employee who is responsible.

Is there any risk in using fall protection approved for 150 kg - if the user weighs less than 100 kg?
No - tests by a third party have shown that fall protection approved for 150 kg also meets the normal standards for a weight of less than 100 kg.

How can I see that my fall arrester can be used by a person weighing more than 100kg?
It is the responsibility of the manufacturer to indicate the maximum permissible weight in the manual and on the equipment itself. The stated weight must be accompanied by reference to the CE standard.

How can other manufacturers besides Tractel claim that their products are approved for 136kg or even 140kg?
Because the numbers correspond to ~ 300 pounds and they comply with ANSI as well as CSA standards. BUT BEWARE: many do not hold back from writing 136kg or 140kg on their fall protection equipment and in the corresponding manuals, but these products do not live up to European standards. These North American standards have nothing to do with the European CNB/P specifications that fall protection for people over 100 kg must meet. For example, it can be mentioned that the maximum permissible impact on the human body is 800 daN on the North American market compared to 600 daN in Europe. It is therefore easier to get the fall protection products approved for a higher capacity on the North American market.

The fall protection program is designed and tested for a maximum weight of 150 kg including equipment. All tests are carried out by an independent third party according to European standards for fall protection.

REMEMBER: the chain is never stronger than the weakest link. Do you use e.g. a fall protection harness approved for 150 kg together with a normal fall block approved for 100 kg, the maximum person weight is still only 100 kg!

Fall protection - container and shed elements

It has long been a wish from drivers and hauliers to get guidance on how, in connection with stacking containers and sheds, a truck or mobile crane can be used for fall protection while at the same time achieving as high a safety factor as possible . The new guidance provides good information about the options available to secure yourself in the best possible way.

Drivers and hauliers are very satisfied

The nationwide industry organization for the Danish road and rail transport industry, DTL, and its DTL Kran-Blok Erfa, are very happy with the new guidance. For many years there has been a great deal of uncertainty surrounding the issue of stacking containers and pavilions, and now the industry's employees have been given useful guidance, which in many respects will make everyday life easier and safer for them.

The new guidance has been made by the Occupational Health and Safety Council for Transport and Wholesale (BAR) in collaboration with Kran Blok ERFA.

Is there a fixed anchor point?

The new guidance provides insight into the possibilities of both the presence and absence of a fixed anchor point. It has been difficult for the rigger to understand how the felling of containers and pavilions should be approached when it is only a matter of temporary work at height. At the same time, this work is often accompanied by a lack of an anchor point, as the absence of fixed structures often makes itself felt in such types of tasks. Here fall protection equipment is an important element.

Fall protection equipment

With the new instructions in hand, it is easy to see how fall protection equipment should be used for the given task, as well as how the chopper is secured in the best possible way. It does not matter which type of fall protection you use if, for example, you have an anchor point in a fixed structure rather than an anchor point in a mobile crane.
