Understanding the colour codes on your webbing sling (WLL)

All approved webbing slings and round slings manufactured in accordance with the European standard EN 1492-1 are colour-coded. The colour makes it quick and easy for the operator to identify the sling's maximum lifting capacity (WLL - Working Load Limit) in a straight lift:

  • Violet: 1,000 kg (1 tonne)
  • Green: 2,000 kg (2 tonnes)
  • Yellow: 3,000 kg (3 tonnes)
  • Grey: 4,000 kg (4 tonnes)
  • Red: 5,000 kg (5 tonnes)
  • Brown: 6,000 kg (6 tonnes)
  • Blue: 8,000 kg (8 tonnes)
  • Orange: 10,000 kg (10 tonnes) and above

In addition to the colour, webbing slings are often fitted with woven-in black lengthwise stripes, where each stripe represents 1 tonne of capacity. Always remember to check the sewn-on blue label, which is your guarantee of the sling's approval and capacity.

Safe use and inspection of webbing slings

Textile lifting equipment such as webbing slings is incredibly strong, but vulnerable to sharp edges and rough surfaces. If the sling is pulled over a sharp steel edge under load, the fibres can be cut, which can lead to a catastrophic failure. Therefore, always use approved edge protection when lifting items with sharp edges. A webbing sling must be visually inspected before each use. If you find fraying, cuts in the load-bearing fibres, chemical damage, or if the blue label is missing or illegible, the sling must be discarded immediately. In addition, all webbing slings must undergo a statutory inspection by a competent person at least once every 12 months.
